The Rise and Falwell of Political Secularism

Jerry Falwell, Religious fundamentalist, bullwark of the christian right and influential political figure passed away this week. So influential that George W Bush posted this moving tribute to a perfect case study in religious extremism:

Laura and I are deeply saddened by the death of Jerry Falwell, a man who cherished faith, family, and freedom. As the founder of Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg, Virginia, Jerry lived a life of faith and called upon men and women of all backgrounds to believe in God and serve their communities. One of his lasting contributions was the establishment of Liberty University, where he taught young people to remain true to their convictions and rely upon God's word throughout each stage of their lives.
Today, our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Macel and the rest of the Falwell family.

A sincere, and heartfelt eulogy to a man who had this to say about the causes behind September 11th:

"I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen.'"

That's right, the most powerful man in the world has paid tribute to a christian extremist who believes Will and Grace, and Germain Greer are to blame for islamic extremists crashing some planes into some towers.... Falwell would later go on to retract those statements with this qualification of his remark:

"I do believe, as a theologian, based upon many Scriptures and particularly Proverbs 14:23, which says 'living by God's principles promotes a nation to greatness, violating those principles brings a nation to shame,'" he said.
Falwell said he believes the ACLU and other organizations "which have attempted to secularize America, have removed our nation from its relationship with Christ on which it was founded."
"I therefore believe that that created an environment which possibly has caused God to lift the veil of protection which has allowed no one to attack America on our soil since 1812," he said.

This is a man who has moved George W Bush to tribute, and seemingly a man who George W Bush not only Admires, but identifies with....
Want to know why we're losing the war on Terrorism? Because you can't promote Islamic Moderatism, when you believe in Christian Extremism. Aggressive anti-arab foreign policy had nothing to do with it of course.... it was God lifting a veil of protection because of a society showing tolerance.
And Australia followed.

Yes, he was a prize dickhead, alright. The Power of Nightmares below explains where he was coming from. Very ugly, indeed.
